故事发生在抗日战争时期。青年农民陈傻子（答有为 饰）家贫如洗，他听说当八路能挣钱娶媳妇，立刻报了名。参军后，由于他脑子反应愚钝，队列训练分不清前后左右，连打枪都学不会，遭到战友讥讽，连首长只好让他进了炊事班学做饭。在一次往阵地送饭时，我军与日寇交战正酣，张连长（孙荣 饰）让傻子留下帮战友打鬼子，傻子无所事事，也不知该帮什么忙，他顺手拿起一颗手榴弹，照葫芦画瓢，弦也没拉，一甩手扔向了百米开外的敌人机枪阵地，大伙对他的投掷能力目瞪口呆。赶忙递给他一颗拉了弦的手榴弹，傻子抓过来又是一甩手，百米开外的敌人机枪轰成了平地。战斗结束后，连长及战友们对他刮目相看......
