《後勁：王建民》由WYC影視（WYC Motions）拍攝，WYC影視、藝博思國際有限公司、牽猴子整合行銷股份有限公司共同出品。加拿大台裔導演陳惟揚花費四年多時間，和王建民一起飛過美國21座城市，紀錄包含王建民在德州棒球農場苦練的艱辛、熱血重返大聯盟在皇家隊的時期，貼身採訪王建民的太太、小孩、經紀人，以及和王建民共事過的教練、經理，更包含和王建民熟識的台灣球員如：郭泓志、鄭錡鴻等。讓觀眾感受從未見過王建民的另一面，感受王建民這一路付出的過程。而這一切也呼應片名《後勁 LATE LIFE》（LATE LIFE在棒球術語，指的是球在最後進到捕手手套時的尾勁，一個階段旅程的漂亮收尾）的意義。

故事背景设定在 1970 年代初期的胡士托近郊，一个将解散的身心障碍青年夏令营展开一场平行的转变，为身心障碍者权利运动揭开序章，从此永远改变年轻人的生活和美国的历史。本片由吉姆·莱布雷希特 (Jim LeBrecht) 和妮可·纽纳姆 (Nicole Newnham) 执导（前者正是该夏令营的学员），两人也与莎拉·博德 (Sara Bolder) 共同担任制作人，监制则为浩尔德·格特勒 (Howard Gertler)。
