在内华达州的拉斯维加斯这座小镇的西北方向，裸露岩石和干旱沙漠绵延不绝的景色中，可以见到地上有一些巨大的碗状圆坑。这就是1962年地下核试验形成的坑洞。美国能源部内华达国家安全区(原内华达核试验场)是美国最主要的核试验场。该场建于1950年底，曾进行过各种形式的大气层和地下核试验。该区现在仍在继续开展不发生爆炸的“次临界核试验”等地下核弹试验，维持并追求着美国的核战力。内华达核试验场先后进行了100次大气圈内核试验， 828次地下核试验。
