 根据邓刚同名小说改编。 80年代初，某海滨城市。一些人不顾水产资源保护条例的规定，肆意到海产保护区捕捞海参、鲍鱼等海洋珍品，他们自称是"碰海"的。其中一个青年人叫海龙，是某街道纸盒厂临时工，另一个青年人叫海兔子，是火车站的二级电工。一天，急于碰海的海兔子扔下工作又去找海龙。纸盒厂的杨组长见海龙不安心工作又要去碰海，便进行劝阻。不料海龙不但不听劝告反而恼羞成怒，将已糊好的纸盒踢翻，扬长而去。当他们到海产保护区捕捞海参时，被管理人员抓住并要罚款。他们身上都没带钱，十分狼狈。这时，他们的朋友白鸥赶到现场，替他们交了罚款，赎回了被扣的衣服，并严厉批评了他们。为了感谢白鸥，海龙请她和她姐姐白珊到海味餐厅赴宴。她们未能如约光临，海龙感到过意不去，便把二斤干海参送到白鸥家中。白鸥追到海边，把海参送了回去，再次劝告他们不要再碰海了，可海龙却认为碰海是靠自己的力气挣钱吃饭，不偷不抢，堂堂正正，所以满不在乎。突然，远处传来水警的摩托声，海龙等人吓得匆忙收拾好碰海用具，躲到礁石后面。白鸥用谎话哄走了警察，又狠狠训斥了海龙等人。白鸥的所作所为和她的肺腑之言，深深地打动了海龙，他决心开始新的生活。在白鸥的帮助下，海龙考上了潜水员；可认为"好汉不挣有数钱"的海兔子却仍旧去碰海。白珊为使自己创作的"碰海人"油画能在美展上获奖，想通过海龙给评委弄点便宜的海参。海龙只好重操旧业，再次碰海，结果又被警察发现。回到家中，他就病倒了，在母亲的劝说下，他决心再也不去碰海了。海兔子也想洗手不干，但由于欠了别人的钱，他要最后再碰一次海。可就在这次碰海时，他疲劳过度再也没有上来。海兔子的死使海龙非常悲痛，海龙向白鸥表示，要在新的"碰海"生涯中，做一个真正合格的潜水员。
