在美丽的森城市中心广场，支教老师们整装待发接受领导检阅。意气风发的丁皎皎（郑岚侨饰）寄托了省领导的深切希望，接过了象征着“奉献精神”的钢笔。封政（宗峰岩饰）原是省事业单位的中层领导，因为晋级受挫外加内心的政治抱负而毅然决定投身到底层支教事业。封政、皎皎和当地学校职工小果子（何美钿饰）由于生活环境的差异而在观念方面产生多种矛盾，但是朴实善良的内心与共同的生活理想让他们逐渐相识相知，齐心协力改造学校环境、提高教学质量，并带领山里的孩子第一次走出大山，参加了市里的歌咏比赛，以原生态的苗族山歌获得了评委会大奖。支教老师们的工作和生活得到小学校长王琦（普超英饰）的无微不至的关怀，但积劳成疾的她却不幸病倒，与世长辞。校长的离世给支教老师们极大的感触……　　本片根据作为中国第一部描写青年志愿者的长篇小说《飞扬的青春》改编。
